The task: fragments
The theme I chose is fragments. I was drawn to this theme as I was the most inspired by it and had many ideas as to what I was going to create. I also liked the idea of creating something with more than one pictures in a single image. The first ideas that came into my head were about experimenting with the structure of crystals and rocks. I would like to try using an outline of their fragments to frame another image such as a face or a landscape.
MY INITIAL PLAN:
|
As the theme I chose didn't name any specific artists to look at I created this board of images to find some works I would like to research. I found many images I feel really inspired by and can't wait to experiment with making some of my own.
Popplet:FRAGMENTS I then created this popplet with the 5 different ideas I would like to try. It shows the 5 final images that I feel most inspired by and would like to experiment with. It also show the 2 sub themes I will experiment with White space/Cutting up images and replacing them.

Jelle MartensJelle Martens is a Belgian artist, graphic designer/illustrator who uses bold geometrical patterns and shapes in his work. He uses a combination of different photos linked by themes such as colour, location and textures to create a single picture. The different sections of the pictures are cropped into triangles and slotted together. It was once said "His work is clean and simple uses repeat pattern to stitch together his images."

FOXES. I was searching photographs using fragments and saw this picture. I took the image to put onto but my website but can no longer find its original website so am unable to find the person who created it. I liked this image originally as I thought it was a unusual photo of a fox even without the fragmented face. I chose this as my first picture to study as I was inspired to create something like this of my cat.

PHOTO SHOOT.1
These were the first set of pictures I took inspired by the image. I took these pictures on my cannon and used creative auto in monochrome to make the images black and white. I have selected the two images on the right to be my base images, however unlike the image of the fox I also took more images of her face and intend to use different images as the fragments not only one picture. The first image I will create by printing, cutting and sticking the images on top of each other. I would also like to use photo shop to make another image. The fox picture has a slightly brown tint to it so I may edit the images and see if I prefer the pictures with the tint or black and white.

MY PHOTOSHOP VERSIONS.
For the first edit I chose to use this image. For this one I tried to make the image less like the foxes picture by placing the fragments where I thought they looked good rather than in positions similar to the first one. For this one I wanted to use photoshop as it is easier to manipulate the images and I could change and delete pictures without having to print out more. |
First I put the picture into photoshop and placed guide lines on so it was easier to arrange the fragmented pictures. I then selected 4 other pictures to use and dragged them onto the image to create 4 new layers.
|
I then used the polliginal lasso tool to select the fragments of the original pictures I wanted and then put the highlighted sections into a new layer. From there I was able to arrange the sections in different positions.
|
Each new layer was ordered and placed carefully so certain pictures were on top of one and other. The images I took were taken with the camera settings on black and white so I didn't have to edit the colour.

MY FINAL RESULTS.
FRAMED PEICE
This is my first final piece. I didn't really like the final image by its self and thought it was only interesting in the centre of the image. When I originally chose the theme of fragments I wanted to experiment with the way I displayed my images. I cut the shape out roughly in the shape of a crystal rock. I like the way it looks like the cat is peeking out of the gap to look into the room it is displayed in. I enjoyed making this as a start but would like to make my next pieces more colourful. |
DMESH EXPERIMENTS
|
|
For these pictures I used the app DMesh on to the laptop to create these pictures. I found this really fun and loved using this software. It allows you to upload images and place dots where you want the image to be turned into triangles. This means the more dots you place the more detailed the image will be. I also made some more but stupidly didn't save them.

trip to the futurist gallery.
|
We took a trip to the estoric art gallery in islington and visited an exhibition about the Italian futurists. They were a group of people who believed in the liberation of words and art. They were also fascinated by the idea of capturing movement in images. On the way to the gallery I tried to take images that I could use for my own project. The exhibition focused on distortion and fragmented shapes so I hope to use this idea of disguising an image through fragmentation. |
COLORED FRAGMENTS.
I found this image while I was searching for inspiration on pinterest. I cant find who made it but I absolutely love it and think it is really beautiful. The original image of the Mooses would be haunting and mystical even without the edit over it. I am going to try and do this editing to some of my photos that I took a while ago and if I like them I will continue on this theme to more images. The first images I will edit will just be experiments.
To create the shapes I first created a coloured layer on photoshop and then screen shot a rectangle of it. I then used this rectangle of colour and placed it over the image. I then used the polligonal lasso tool to highlight a triangular shape and copied and pasted it into a new layer. I continued this process to create a crystal like image.
|
FINAL IMAGE.
I decided to put the image of the girls behind the layer with the shapes. I really like the way it distorts the image and only allows you to see segments of the picture. I would like to experiment with making the image seem more natural and blended in a different way to make it look less pristine and computerised. I really like how the large white space makes you focus more on the image behind and makes you examine the picture.

Aaron Moran is a sculptural artist and his work is very much like my own, accept he creates 3d pieces father than flat pictures. If I had more time and resources I would have made a sculpture like his using my own images printed on its faces.
SECOND PROJECT.
For this my plan was to continue with the idea of using photoshop to create a new shape, however this time instead of using colours over a photograph I would use a variety of images I had taken. I did two shoots with two different themes, one in blue, one in green.
SHOOT 1.
SHOOT 2.
I began by copying out the rough shape of a crystal in a blue line. This was to act as a guide line as to were to place the segments of photos. I then when through the procedure on photoshop of selecting areas of photos in the shape of the guide using the lasso tool. I then copy and pasted them into a new layer. I also used some solid colours to pull all of the photos together. |
Final blue.
I took out some sections of images and drew another line to make it look more sketched but still don't really like it. I am glad I experimented with creating these shapes however I am not happy with the outcome. I would like to try creating something physicaly instead of using a computer. I don't think photoshop can give me the style of image I want as it is to clean and the fragments of photos just look out of place.
PHOTOSHOP
For these images I used Photoshop to layer images over one and other to create a interesting new picture. I wanted to create pictures with vivid colours and lots of texture so that they will stand out when I put them behind the whit frame I have cut out.
Galery visit: Lorenzo Vitturi
He uses objects from a market and puts them together so that they look like something else. This is a very similar idea to my own work as I have been creating shapes out of pictures to create an entirely new image. |

FRAGMENTED WEBS
TRIPLET of shapes.
For this I wanted to create another smaller final piece. I decided to create a triplet of images as I have only been focusing on one large Piece. I First chose two images (one from each photoshoot) and laid the green image over the blue image. I used the poligonal lasso tool to highlight each section of the image I wanted working to a template, much like I have done in my previous pieces. For the shading in I simply used the paint bucket to fill in the different fragments of the crystal shapes, selecting different shades of blue from the same palate. I then increased the opacity so the image behind the rock could be seen as if it were a coloured window. I am really happy with the outcome of this experiment and think they look like kaleidoscope of glass. I think the mix of colour and line is overall very visually appealing.
