HOW TO TAKE A SUCCESSFUL PHOTO.
When you draw with light you need to take into account many factors to take a good picture. You need to be in a dark space so that the picture dosent become completely over exposed and turn white. You need to keep the camera as still as possible using a tripod if you can. The shutter speed you use depends on how dark your space is, for if it is to long in a light room your pictures will be over exposed. If you want to have people in your picture you should shine a flash of light on them for less than a second. You need to also consider which aperture to use (On the left) so that your pictures are not to bright or to dark.

shutter speed - how long the shutter is left open, measured in seconds or fractions of a second
aperture - how much light is allowed into the camera through the lens, measured in f stops
ISO - the sensitivity of the camera to light, measured in numbers 100 to 6400
long exposure - leaving the shutter open for an unusually long amount of time
(off camera) flash - an additional, brief source of bright light that can ‘stop’ a subject in motion (we used this independently of the camera so we could choose when to ‘fire’ it)

Here I tried to draw wings and a Halo on Bee. The first image we took was the bottom one. Here the camera was not properly focused which meant the picture of Bee was blured. The aperture was also to open meaning the back round was not all black. For the second image we changed the aperture and focused the camera on her. The top one is my favorite picture we took.

For this picture it was clear that the camera was out of focus and the exposure was to long. We also needed to change the aperture. We used a flash light to illuminate the body but realised it was better to flash it from bellow the person. We did this for the top picture with made the back round darker.

The bottom picture was taken after the one to the left so it was also out of focus and the exposure was to long. We also needed to change the aperture but once we did that the pictures worked well. The top picture was much better but there wasn't enough time to draw all of the wing. When we take the next set of pictures we need to draw much quicker to get a whole image.

Darren pearson

Darren Pearson lives in Los Angeles, where he works as an illustrator. When its dark he goes out to create life-sized light-sculptures around California. I really love his pictures and love the images he creates. I think the locations he uses are stunning and the drawings just make the pictures even more amazing to look at. I am really inspired by his pieces and would one day love to try something like this. He also has a instagram full of his images.

These were our second attempt at light painting. These were more sucsesful than the last set as we were in a completely dark room and could control everything. my favorite image is the one where Bee and I drew hearts. However the person who was flashing the light dicided to do it twice which slightly ruined the image. Next time we will get someone more reliable to flash it.

STROBE PHOTOGRAPHY
|
Harold Edgerton was a pioneer in strobe photography. He was a professor of electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He wasn't a profesional photographer and used it only as a way to capture movement to fast for the human eye. He invented a machine that shone flashes of light one after eachother in order to capture multiple images from one long exposure. He also was able to use this method to capture a speeding bullet passing through a playing card. |
For these I directed the shot and came up with the idea for what I wanted it to look like. I do overall like the pictures but as I could not control what everyone was doing the person operating the camera did not focus it properly meaning the images are blured. Next time I will make sure the camera is focused and use less flashes.

SET TWO
These were our second set of Pictures. Here we did both painting with light and strobe photography. I think these were our most successful set of photos as the lighting and images are the most interesting set ups we did so far. My favourite is the one where bee is swimming in the ocean. It took two attempts to perfect but I was really happy with the final third picture. The flash of light on her body was perfect and the blue waves are really defined. Overall I really loved all of the final images

Holidays These were some more pictures I took with my friends in the holiday. We experimented with torches and I also took pictures of a bonfire on a long exposure. I like the way they turned out seeing as we were outside and I didn't bother to change the iso or aperture. |
